The government spends a great deal of money on “combating” drinking and driving, yet it seems that we still haven’t made any strides on decreasing the amount of DUI’s. How about this - why not simply start educating kids very early? I learned about the “birds and the bees” back in fourth grade... Why not educate kids on the consequences of drinking and driving at a young age as well?
From an educational and psychological perspective, I know that kids are very impressionable and the earlier you teach them, the better. I mentioned before how in the ninth grade I had to sit through a movie and actually see the consequences of drunk driving - heads crushed, severed arms, etc. Those images have stayed with me til this day! I read this article about how a high school in Ohio recently invited people to tell their stories on drunk driving. This is part of an educational program put on by the Trumbull County Alcohol and Drug Free Coalition.
Here in San Diego, I don’t know of any schools that offer education on the consequences of drunk driving. If you do, let me know and I’ll post an update here!
