According this article over at SanDiego6.com, alcohol related crimes are down since the ban on beach booze took effect last November. The Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee reported these statistics:
  • 3,438 alcohol-related citations were given in 2007, compared to 2,855 so far this year, a decline of nearly 17 percent
  • Drunk-in-public arrests were down more than 7 percent -- from 596 in 2007 to 553 this year
  • The number of minors found in possession of alcohol was also down significantly, falling nearly 52 percent from 699 incidents in 2007 to 337 this year
What's interesting to note is that despite this decrease in alcohol related crimes, drunk driving arrests were up this year - 616 DUI arrests so far this year, up more than 8 percent from the 569 recorded in 2007.

All these statistics are presented in time for voters to make a decision on Proposition D which would permanently make the consumption of alcohol unlawful at city beaches, Mission Bay Park and other parks along the coast.

Personally, I have noticed that the beaches have been more quiet. The one night this summer that I did go out to the beach, I didn't see as many bonfires as I used to back in my younger days.

What do you think about the booze ban at the beaches?
